Making sense of a complex end user market
Leading Edge was approached by a European supplier of wastewater treatment equipment that was seeking to gain a clearer picture of overseas markets for a specific technology it was looking to promote to a particular industry. Although the client had made some initial forays into the target sector, a lack of reliable insights into market scale and customer appetite had, to date, limited the development of a broader pan-European strategy. With its expertise in international market research, Leading Edge was tasked with unlocking deeper knowledge to inform future growth.
Multi-country research with localised Insight
The project focused on four European markets. To ensure relevance and clarity across language barriers, a pre-translated questionnaire was developed and used during the chosen method of data collection, telephone interviews. Respondents also had the option of completing the survey online via a secure portal.
Recognising the difficulty of accessing this specialist sector, Leading Edge collaborated closely with the client, drawing on existing contacts to enhance outreach. This was further strengthened by Leading Edge’s own desk research, which identified a significant number of additional sites where the technology could potentially be applied.
Identification of opportunities despite a lack of appetite towards investment
Despite the complexities of cold-calling into a traditionally conservative industry, the research yielded a detailed assessment of the opportunities and constraints that were likely to affect the client’s specific technical solution. A key challenge that was noted was the inertia of many sites towards investment in wastewater and liquid treatment. Despite handling multiple waste streams, many were hesitant to embrace change. This reluctance was compounded by uncertainty around future regulatory requirements and, for a sizeable minority, space constraints for implementing approaches to treatment.
Strategic recommendations for market penetration
In response to these findings, Leading Edge provided a strategic roadmap to help the client navigate this cautious market. Emphasis was placed on tailoring its marketing message to pain points such as the need for compact, modular systems that can operate in space-constrained environments. Over the medium to long term, it was also recommended that the client invest in educating the market about the broader advantages of its technology – particularly the opportunities presented to permit resource reduction, which was identified as a compelling benefit and potential differentiator for the client in a competitive landscape.
