ConTech Market Research for a Subcontractor Compliance Platform

Share via:

Overview

A technology-led service provider approached Leading Edge to support the development of a new digital platform aimed at subcontractors operating across the UK construction supply chain, as part of a wider programme of construction market research.

The goal was to understand how subcontractors currently source work, manage compliance requirements, and engage with existing digital tools — and to assess the potential for a new, integrated ConTech solution.

The Challenge

The client was exploring the development of a new platform combining lead generation with subcontractor compliance management, including SSIP certification.

However, there was limited clarity on:

  • How subcontractors currently find and win work
  • The role and effectiveness of existing lead generation tools
  • How compliance and certification are managed in practice
  • Whether there was genuine appetite for a combined digital solution

Without this insight, there was a risk of developing a platform that did not align with real market needs or behaviours.

Our Approach

We designed and delivered an independent research programme targeting subcontractors across the UK construction sector, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative market research methodologies.

This included:

  • A structured quantitative survey to capture usage of lead generation tools, certification management, and digital platforms
  • Qualitative exploration of frustrations, unmet needs, and day-to-day challenges
  • Testing of early-stage platform concepts, including features such as SSIP integration and mobile access
  • Segmentation of responses to identify differences in behaviour and requirements across subcontractor types

This approach ensured both breadth of data and depth of insight, supporting robust product development decisions.

Key Insights

The research provided a clear and evidence-based view of how subcontractors operate within the construction supply chain:

  • Subcontractors rely on a mix of informal networks and digital tools to source work, with no single dominant platform
  • Existing lead generation tools were often seen as fragmented or inconsistent in value
  • Compliance management, including SSIP certification, was typically handled separately from business development activities
  • There was clear interest in solutions that could simplify both lead generation and compliance in one place
  • Mobile accessibility and ease of use were critical factors influencing potential adoption

The Outcome

The research provided the client with a robust evidence base to support product development and go-to-market strategy.

Specifically, it:

  • Identified clear opportunities for differentiation within the ConTech market
  • Validated the potential value of integrating subcontractor compliance into a lead generation platform
  • Helped prioritise features most likely to drive engagement and adoption
  • Provided clarity on how to position the platform within a competitive and fragmented landscape

This enabled the client to move forward with greater confidence, grounded in real market insight rather than assumption.
